“You Want Time To Prepare Mentally” -Devdutt Padikkal On His Potential India Debut The Night Before The 5th Test

Left-handed batsman Devdutt Padikkal marked his Test debut for India in the current match against England in Dharamsala. Yet, the debut wasn’t a certain decision for the newcomer, as his inaugural appearance hung in the balance.

Padikkal mentioned receiving a message from the team management indicating a potential chance to play in the Dharamsala Test. The 23-year-old admitted to feeling anxious until matchday, uncertain about whether he would indeed make his debut.

In an interview with Sports18 after the conclusion of Day 2, Devdutt Padikkal shared his thoughts on the lead-up to his debut for India.

“I wouldn’t say it is great because you want time to prepare mentally, to be honest, uh, not being sure that if you are playing or not playing, it’s a bit of a dilemma, but at the same time, it’s a special feeling. I got the message the previous night saying that there was a possibility I could be playing this game.”

However, Padikkal conveyed his feelings upon receiving the India cap and explained how his initial nervousness gradually subsided. His inclusion came as a replacement for Rajat Patidar, who, as per the BCCI, sustained an injury to his left ankle during a practice session and was unavailable for selection.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill extended England’s woes with a wicketless morning session. However, Ben Stokes delivered a beauty soon after lunch, dismissing the Indian captain. James Anderson then removed the settled batter Gill, introducing two new batters for India.
