Aakash Chopra sees parallels between Joe Root and Chamari Athapaththu dismissals

ormer cricketer Aakash Chopra can see parallels betwen Joe Root’s dismissal at Ranchi and Chamari Athapaththu’s one during the WPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriorz on March 5.

Controversy erupted on Monday during the league match in Bengaluru as the Sri Lankan all-rounder was given out after a controversial DRS call during RCB’s 23-run win. Chopra weighed in on the matter on X and claimed that it was a leg-spin delivery an the ball had pitched very close to the foot.

The former cricketer said he wanted to hear what Hawkeye had to say about the call and wondered if more errors happen when the ball is pitching really close to the impact on the pads. Chopra said much like Root’s dismissal in Ranchi, this was one was also a half-volley.

“This is a leg-spin delivery. The ball pitches really close to the foot. Hawkeye’s projection takes it as a straight ball/googly…shows hitting the middle stump. Would love to hear Hawkeye’s explanation for this. Do more errors happen when the ball is pitching really close to the impact on the pads? Remember Joe Root’s LBW was a half-volley too,” said Chopra.
