IPL 2024: Shreyas Iyer to join Kolkata Knight Riders camp

After much speculation about Shreyas Iyer’s participation in the Indian Premier League, the Kolkata Knight Riders skipper will finally join the camp in couple of days time.

The IPL 2024 will begin on March 22 in Chepauk, with KKR playing their first match the following day against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

According to media reports, the skipper of the Kolkata franchise is fully fit, after news of the recurrence of his back injury went viral on social media a day before. Iyer complained of pain in the back during the Ranji Trophy final match between Mumbai and Vidarbha but he was seeing dancing after Mumbai’s title win on Thursday. He played a pivotal knock of 95 runs for Mumbai.

After playing the initial matches of the recently-concluded England Test series, the seasoned batter was ruled out of the remainder of games due to the back injury. Iyer went for surgery for the same issue last year but has been experiencing mild to moderate pain ever since. Meanwhile, he has been declared fit as of now to take part in the IPL.

The KKR will begin their camp with a practice session on Friday while Iyer is expected to join the team by Sunday. The Team India player lost hi BCCI central contract earlier as he refused to participate in the domestic fixtures. However, news Iyer getting back his contract are also doing the rounds.

Gautam Gambhir returns to old den

Meanwhile, former KKR player Gautam Gambhir has joined the Kolkata camp ahead of the beginning of the tournament. Gambhir was roped in by the franchise as mentor so as to boost their side by using his expertise in the cash-rich league. KKR would be hoping to win the marquee event after a gap of 10 years.
