Afghanistan’s star spinner Rashid Khan has been one of the top performers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since making his debut in the cash-rich league back in 2017.
The 25-year-old, who started his IPL stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad, was drafted in by Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. Since 2017, Rashid has claimed 139 wickets in 110 IPL matches.
His economy rate of 6.66 is the best for bowlers, who have claimed over 100 wickets and played over 100 matches in the IPL. However, his numbers against one opposition has been mixed over the years.
Rashid has at times struggled in games against Chennai Super Kings. Although he has claimed 14 wickets in his fifteen appearances against CSK, Rashid’s economy rate is on a slightly higher side against the Chennai-based team.
The leg-spinner’s bowling average is also 31.57 against the Chennai Super Kings, while his overall average is 20.92. During his time with GT, the Afghan conceded 44 runs in just 3 overs without claiming a wicket in the IPL 2023 final against CSK.
Even on a wicket believed to assist the spinners at Chepauk last season, Rashid took only one wicket and gave away 37 runs in his quota of 4 overs. But Rashid produced a spell of 2 for 26 in 4 overs in the season 2023 opener.
In 2022 title winning season for GT, Rashid claimed 1 wicket and conceded 31 runs at the Wankhede against MS Dhoni’s side after a spell of 29 for 0 at the MCA Stadium in his first match for Titans against CSK.
The 25-year-old struggled to contain former CSK batter Ambati Rayudu, conceding 93 runs in 10 innings. Rashid also conceded 95 runs in 7 innings against the new CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been dismissed by the Afghan twice in those matches.
While Rashid will have no worry of bowling to Rayudu, who retired following last season, the Gujarat Titans spinner will be up against the CSK captain at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday (March 26).
