Former champions clash for the title as Multan Sultans and Islamabad United lock horns in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 final at the National Stadium in Karachi on Monday (March 18).
Mohammad Rizwan-led Multan Sultans earned a direct entry into the PSL 2024 final following a 7-wicket victory over Peshawar Zalmi in the qualifier, while Shadab Khan’s Islamabad United had to get past Quetta Gladiators by 39 runs before a 5-wicket win over Zalmi to reach the summit clash.
The two sides are coming into the title clash on the back of winning runs. While Multan are on two-match winning run, Islamabad are undefeated in the last four, including a victory over the Sultans in the league phase.
In the recent outings, Usama Mir (2 for 16) and Chris Jordan (2 for 28) helped restrict Peshawar to 146/7 before Yasir Khan fifty and Iftkhar Ahmed unbeaten cameo took Multan Sultans past the target and into the final.
Islamabad United, on the other hand, first rode on Martin Guptill fifty to put up 174 on the board before Imad Wasim claimed three wickets to bundle out Quetta Gladiators for 135 in the Eliminator 1. They then chased down 186 against Peshawar riding on unbeaten fifties from Imad and Haider Ali.
The two sides will now clash for the third time this season when they cross paths for the 16th time in HBL PSL and for the third time at the Karachi venue, where both Islamabad and Multan have shared a win each.
In their recent meeting in Rawalpindi, Usman Khan’s century had taken Multan Sultans to 228, but that knock went in vain as Colin Munro’s 84 and Shadab’s 51 kept Islamabad United alive in the chase before cameos from Faheem Ashraf (23 off 14) and Imad Wasim (30* off 13) finished the job in the final over.
Earlier in the reverse fixture in Multan, Mohammad Ali’s spell of 3 for 19 in 4 overs helped bundle out Islamabad United to 144 before skipper Rizwan (43 off 33) and Reeza Hendricks (58 off 46) played crucial knocks as Multan Sultans chased the score down with 5 wickets and a ball to spare.
